The race for the Senate seat in Texas just had a major wrench thrown into it.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is primarying Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) is now in the middle of an ugly divorce.
Paxton has been leading in polls, but the nature of the announcement made by his wife may have just ended his Senate hopes.
Angela Paxton is also involved in Texas politics, currently serving as a state senator.
She broke the news on X that she was leaving her controversial husband, posting, “Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds."
The state lawmaker added, “I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. But in light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage."
She continued, “I move forward with complete confidence that God is always working everything together for the good of those who love Him and who are called according to His purpose.”
Ken Paxton also made an announcement, taking a bit of a different route, stating, "After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives.”
He later added, "I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting our amazing children and grandchildren. I ask for your prayers and privacy at this time."
Privacy in the midst of an election after a divorce announcement is something that Paxton will not get.
Not only that, after the line of attack from his wife, I am not sure how much support Paxton will get in the Bible Belt, as it sure sounded a lot like she was accusing her husband of infidelity.
Cornyn has not been polling well, as many voters are unhappy with him, but I have to admit, he has not been the thorn in President Donald Trump’s side that I had anticipated. He has actually been helping Trump quite a bit in the early months of the president's second term.
In recent polling, Cornyn is still getting clobbered by Paxton, down by 19 points in a Paxton-allied PAC poll, so we are going to have to see how this latest report impacts polling during the next round.
My concern right now is that polling on the Democrat side of the aisle has Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) leading, even though she has not announced her candidacy.
Dems have embraced her radical style, and with a weak GOP candidate, we could have a real problem on our hands come November. Let’s just hope the Paxton divorce did not just cost us a forever-red seat in the Senate.
