In a typical election after a party change in the White House, the new incoming party gets crushed in the subsequent mid-term election.
My belief is that this happens because voters are upset that the administration has not delivered on its ridiculous promises.
Trump has delivered on quite a bit of his promises, which is why Speaker Johnson (R-LA) believes the GOP will defy history.
Republicans dominate congressional seats in my home state of Texas, but they are looking for more.
New district maps are being proposed that would likely result in Democrats losing about five of their seats (they currently hold 12).
If you ask me if this is gerrymandering, I will say yes, but I will also say that everyone does it.
That does not make it right, but that is just a fact. And all these people whining about gerrymandering are likely doing the same thing in blue states.
Governor Gavin Newsom has already threatened to redraw the lines in California if Texas removes those seats from Democrats.
Currently, there are only nine seats held by Republicans in California, but Newsom is likely looking to cut that number in half, and he is not even hiding his intentions.
Newsom stated, “If we don’t put a stake into the heart of this administration, there may not be an election in 2028. They’re not screwing around. We can’t afford to screw around either. We have got to fight fire with fire.”
I believe they have already done that in California, as the ratio of GOP voters to Democrat voters compared to members of Congress is significantly off, so there is no soapbox for Newsom to preach from here.
Johnson sounds pretty confident that he can keep the House in 2026, and it is all because of what Trump has done thus far.
He stated, “I’m very excited about the midterm election. You know that we’re going to defy history when we grow the majority in the House because it’s only twice in the last 90 years that a sitting president has picked up seats for his party in that first election cycle, but we’re going to do it this time."
Johnson continued, “We have a very favorable map, regardless of how well this comes out, and we have policies. We’re delivering on our promises for the people, and that’s going to make all the difference.”
We still have a long way to go, and anything can happen, but the wins by Trump thus far are undeniable. This will all come down to how much money people are putting in their bank accounts, and I hope it is enough for Johnson’s prediction to come true.
