Insiders say Nicole Kidman thrives after split while Keith Urban faces a harder fallout

Nicole Kidman has focused on family and work after ending her long marriage to Keith Urban, while anonymous sources describe the country star as more emotional and adrift in the aftermath.

Hollywood chatter has turned to how the two stars have handled life after their split, and the contrast is sharp. SheKnows reported that Kidman, 59, has surrounded herself with her daughters and buried herself in work, while sources close to Urban paint a tougher picture for the Nashville-based singer.

The pair’s 19-year marriage ended after a September 2025 divorce filing. Kidman has since been cast as the steady single mother who kept her footing. Urban, per anonymous accounts, has looked shaken.

Kidman put family and the job first

In the immediate aftermath, Kidman stayed close to daughters Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. She also kept working, including on a Practical Magic sequel with Sandra Bullock.

A Hollywood insider quoted by the Daily Mail said she came through the split looking strong. “Nicole has certainly come out of the divorce smelling like a rose. Her life looks like a fairytale; she has it all,” the source said. “She’s not just beautiful but wicked smart, so no one should be surprised that she handled the divorce so well. She is extremely savvy.”

Another line from the same reporting put it plainly: “Nicole has played the post-divorce game very well by focusing on her family first, establishing herself as a solid single mom. And she is a great mom.”

That family-first posture tracks with how many readers outside the industry still judge these breakups. When public marriages collapse, the parent who keeps the home steady usually earns the quieter respect. Similar high-profile splits, including messy political divorces, often turn on the same question of who protects the kids and who drifts.

Urban’s side looks far less settled

Sources close to Urban offered a different account. A second Daily Mail source said the singer has been the more emotional one since the split. “Keith, surprisingly, has been the more emotional one post-divorce. I don’t think he ever thought he’d find himself divorced at 58. It’s kind of like he’s having a midlife crisis,” the source said. “He’s Keith Urban. Girls are literally still throwing themselves at him, yet now he’s single.”

Affair allegations surfaced around the same period and were never confirmed. A source told Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack that Kidman “isn’t disputing the rumors, but she’s floored by how blatant it all feels.” A-list friends reportedly closed ranks, leaving Urban off guest lists he once filled.

Filing details and Kidman’s own words

The New York Post reported that Kidman filed on Sept. 30 in Nashville, citing irreconcilable differences, with the separation listed as of the filing date. Insiders said the couple had already lived apart since early summer, and some claimed Urban was seeing another woman. Kidman later spoke about enduring painful change and finding a way through it.

“There’s something to knowing that no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “You’re going to feel like you’re broken, but if you move gently and slowly, and it can take an enormous amount of time, it does pass.”

Fox News reported the divorce was finalized in January with irreconcilable differences cited. Kidman was named primary residential parent of the two daughters, with joint major decisions and no spousal support sought by either side. She described the emotional toll directly: “There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable.” On the heartbreak itself she added, “It’s all new. Every time!”

A summer reset and an honest interview

Kidman was also linked to a summer fling with businessman Michael Reinstein after the two were spotted lounging by a pool in Portofino, Italy. In British Vogue she spoke of a “Euro summer” and “embracing love,” while admitting the life she planned had changed.

"I didn't expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now. You make all these plans, and you have all these ideas of what it's all going to be like, and then it's... not. You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it's completely unknown to me right now."

She appeared at the 78th Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, looking at ease in the spotlight without Urban beside her.

Hollywood will keep score on image and guest lists. What lasts is simpler: the parent who stays steady, the vows that failed, and the kids who did not ask for any of it.
