Armed fugitive killed by Dallas SWAT reportedly served on Jasmine Crockett's security detail

A fugitive who pointed a gun at Dallas SWAT officers before being shot and killed Wednesday had served as a key member of Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett's security detail, CBS News reported Friday.

The man, who used the alias Mike King, was wanted by police for impersonating a law enforcement officer while running an online business that placed actual officers in off-duty jobs. Officers tracked him to the parking garage of a children's hospital in Dallas, Texas, forced him out of his car using tear gas, and fired when he drew a gun at them.

He died at the scene.

A Trusted Insider With a Fake Name

CBS News Texas reported that the fugitive had stood in close proximity to Crockett during her campaign events, and documents obtained by the network showed that Crockett paid a man named "Mike King" for security services in 2025. The Friday broadcast made the scope of his access plain:

"These images of Mike King standing close to Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett shows how trusted he was as part of her security detail while she's been in office and while on the campaign trail during her recent run for a U.S. Senate seat."

Anonymous sources told CBS News that the man had a criminal record, drove a vehicle resembling an undercover police car, and used stolen license plates. He was reportedly in charge of security teams at multiple Dallas hotels as well as his church.

None of this, apparently, raised flags before he was embedded in a sitting congresswoman's inner circle.

What Dallas Police Won't Say

Dallas Police Department officials have not named the deceased fugitive or disclosed his relationship to Crockett. That silence is notable. A man operating under a known alias, wanted for impersonating law enforcement, managed to secure paying work on the security detail of a United States congresswoman. The public deserves a full accounting of how that happened, and so far the official response amounts to a blank page, as The Daily Caller reports.

Crockett herself has offered no public statement in the source reporting. No explanation of vetting procedures. No comment on how a fugitive operating under a fake identity ended up being paid for security services by her office or campaign.

The Bigger Picture

This story sits at the intersection of several problems that conservatives have long flagged. The first is basic competence. Members of Congress have access to sensitive information, attend high-profile events, and move through secure environments. The people standing next to them, entrusted with their physical safety, should at minimum be who they say they are. The fact that a man using an alias and wanted by police could pass through whatever screening process exists here is a serious failure.

The second is accountability. Washington operates on a tiered system where the rules that apply to ordinary Americans evaporate for the political class, until something goes catastrophically wrong. A private citizen who hired a fugitive using a fake name to carry a firearm in professional settings would face intense scrutiny. A congresswoman's office should face more, not less.

Crockett lost the March 3 Democratic Senate primary to Texas State Rep. James Talarico by six percentage points, ending her bid to move from the House to the Senate. That campaign trail is precisely where CBS News reported "Mike King" was operating as part of her security. Voters who attended those events were in proximity to a wanted fugitive carrying a weapon, a man who ultimately drew on SWAT officers rather than surrender.

Questions That Need Answers

The outstanding questions are straightforward:

  • What is the fugitive's real name, and why hasn't it been released?
  • What vetting process, if any, did Crockett's office or campaign use before hiring armed security?
  • How long did "Mike King" serve on her detail?
  • Did he have access to secure congressional facilities or events?
  • Who else, if anyone, in Crockett's orbit knew about his background?

These are not gotcha questions. They are basic public safety inquiries that any responsible officeholder should welcome the chance to answer.

The Standoff Itself

It is worth pausing on where this ended: the parking garage of a children's hospital. Officers cornered a fugitive in a location filled with sick kids and their families, deployed tear gas, and ultimately had to use lethal force when he refused to go quietly. The man entrusted with protecting a congresswoman chose to point his weapon at law enforcement rather than face the consequences of his alleged crimes.

That tells you everything about the kind of person who was standing shoulder to shoulder with Jasmine Crockett at public events, paid with documented funds, operating under a name that wasn't his.
