Rashida Tlaib chanted 'KKK' while Republicans cheered 'USA' during Trump's State of the Union

While Republican lawmakers filled the chamber with chants of "USA" during President Donald Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) had a different refrain. The National Republican Congressional Committee posted a clip showing the far-left "Squad" member repeatedly chanting "KKK" on camera, turning what should be a unifying national moment into her own personal protest stunt.

She wasn't alone in her contempt. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) sat next to Tlaib, and according to the New York Post, both lawmakers tuned out for most of the president's speech, appeared to be playing on their cellphones, and only paused to scream nasty remarks at the president. Both reportedly left early.

The NRCC didn't mince words about the display:

"Everything you need to know about today's Democrats. They cannot stand this country, they cannot stand its comeback, & they cannot hide their contempt anymore."

A Party That Can't Even Show Up

Tlaib and Omar weren't the only Democrats who couldn't stomach an evening of presidential address. Dozens of their colleagues boycotted the speech entirely. Among them was Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who skipped the State of the Union to attend an event run by left-wing activists to advocate for transing minors.

Think about that choice for a moment. A sitting member of Congress decided that an activist event promoting medical interventions on children was a better use of her time than the constitutionally significant address of the president of the United States. The boycott wasn't principled dissent. It was self-selection into irrelevance.

The Democrats who did show up weren't much better. The ones caught on camera chanting the name of a hate group while their Republican colleagues expressed love of country offered a split-screen that no amount of media spin can paper over, as Breitbart reports.

Trump Responds

President Trump didn't let the performance go unaddressed. He excoriated both Tlaib and Omar in a post on Truth Social after the address:

"When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event."

He continued:

"They had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalized."

"When people can behave like that, and knowing that they are Crooked and Corrupt Politicians, so bad for our Country, we should send them back from where they came — as fast as possible."

The Real Split Screen

There's a reason the "USA" versus "KKK" moment resonates beyond a single viral clip. It captures something that has been building for years inside the Democratic Party: a faction that is not merely opposed to the current president but visibly hostile to the symbols, traditions, and ceremonies of the country itself.

The State of the Union is one of the few remaining civic rituals that still commands a national audience. It's an evening when even fierce political opponents traditionally sit in the same room, stand for the same flag, and observe a baseline of institutional respect. You can disagree with every word a president says and still understand that the office, the setting, and the occasion deserve a measure of decorum.

Tlaib and Omar decided the occasion deserved heckling. Jayapal decided it deserved skipping. Dozens of their colleagues agreed. And the ones who bothered to attend made themselves into the story by behaving in ways that would get most adults removed from a high school auditorium.

The Democratic leadership's problem isn't that a few members are difficult to manage. It's that the behavior no longer shocks anyone. When a member of Congress chants the name of a white supremacist terror group on the House floor during a presidential address and the dominant reaction from her own party is silence, the fringe has become the center.

Republicans chanted "USA." Democrats chanted something else. The country watched, and the country saw the difference.
