For Zohran Mamdani to get his agenda in place in New York City, he needs businesses to be taxed.
After he was elected, there was pushback from some business owners who stated they had planned to leave the city. But now it is being revealed that he also has to deal with the fact that roughly 5,000 businesses have already fled the Big Apple.
As far as Mamdani and his socialist buddies are concerned, the rich need to pay for everyone in the country, or, in this case, in New York City.
Mandani wants to hit business owners with extra taxes to help fund his programs.
The new mayor did not pull any punches during his inauguration, stating, “For too long in our city, freedom has belonged only to those who can afford to buy it. Our City Hall will change that.”
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), the king of the socialist movement in this country, added, “Demanding that the wealthy and large corporations start paying their fair share of taxes is not radical. It is exactly the right thing to do.”
With Mamdani now in office and higher tax rates to follow, many business owners and wealthy residents have been looking to move out of the city to find friendlier locations, but they are now finding that it is not so easy to just pick up and leave.
In 2022, the highest earners in the city accounted for $5.4 billion in tax revenue, and while many are now looking to leave, they are wary of cutting all ties to New York, which can create a problem with the city auditors.
Kenneth T. Zemsky, a local tax lawyer, claims that only 10% of his clients who have inquired about leaving actually follow through because they don’t want to jump through all the hoops.
He explained, “They’ll push back and say, ‘Well, I don’t want to do all that. How little can I do to sever?’ If you’re thinking in those terms, you’re probably not going to do enough at the end of the day.”
While the individuals are struggling to leave, business owners who were feeling the hammer about to fall have already left, with roughly 5,000 businesses leaving the city before Mamdani took office.
Mamdani wants to raise the corporate tax rate from the current maximum of 7.25% up to a maximum of 11.5%. In 2023, the effective tax rate was 5.9%, which, based on Mamdani’s hike, would make the effective rate around 9.35%, a significant increase.
This is on the heels of a recent report that more than 70% of companies in the city do not feel like the financial environment in the city is a good one.
This is not good news for the socialist, not to mention the fact that he will see resistance to his plan from the governor’s mansion as well as local lawmakers. If Mamdani does not get his tax revenue, his entire agenda crashes and burns, and with it, hopefully, this ridiculous socialist movement.
